Career Program: Dental Hygienist
Originally From: Appleton
Current Residence: Appleton
Year Started at FVTC: Fall 2022

Why did you choose this career program?

I chose dental hygiene because I have always wanted to work in a dental office. Growing up, I never minded going to the dentist and always thought it would be fun to clean people’s teeth. I have always wanted to work in healthcare and help people somehow. A big thing for me is the flexibility of the part-time program we have at the tech as well.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

It is interesting how much the hygienists do behind the scenes. Also, the education and information they provide to patients has to be rewarding!

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I chose Fox Valley Technical College for many reasons. The most obvious is its affordability and the fact that my learning style is hands-on and in-person. I also appreciate the smaller class sizes and the flexibility FVTC offers. Another important reason is that my mom has Parkinson’s disease and MSA, and I’m her primary caregiver at home. Attending a nearby college is the most convenient option for me.

How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?

Fox Valley Tech has helped me find myself after high school. It keeps me grounded and focused. I’ve also met great friends and supportive staff while attending FVTC. My time here has helped me learn to manage my time better in adult life.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

A full-time, or part-time position as a dental hygienist in an office.

What’s your best advice for someone who’s not sure they’re ready for college?

Try taking a couple of general classes that meet once or twice a week to get a feel for the school.

In addition to teaching the technical skills required for Surgical Technicians, Amber Nevala thrives on instilling in her students a sense of confidence. “I always tell them that they have to be like a duck when they’re in the OR,” she says. “You may be panicking on the inside, but you have to stay cool,
