Why did you choose this career program?
Ever since I was young, I had an interest in understanding how things connect and function at deeper levels. This was why I got my undergrad in biology. When it comes to IT, I chose networking because I build my own computers as a hobby and wanted to better understand how these devices connect and communicate with one another. I find it fascinating that systems across the world can exchange information and work together, allowing devices and people thousands of miles apart to communicate seamlessly.
What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
Even though I am specializing in networking, the IT field allows me to explore many different areas of technology. Working in IT also means that the skills I gain from other disciplines can complement my networking knowledge and help me become a more well-rounded professional. I only have around one year of experience in the field, but during that time, I have learned about a variety of technologies and gained hands-on experience working with different types of equipment. This is what I have found to be the most rewarding: having the opportunity to learn about many different areas rather than specializing in only one.
Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I chose FVTC because of the affordability and the opportunities that the school offered. In my case, it was an internship and the job network which gave me the opportunity to find a full-time job, while I still complete my degree. Being able to learn and work at the same time in my desired field helps twofold in providing me with work experience while getting my degree. In my opinion, this is what makes FVTC great — the amount of opportunities the school provides.
How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?
Before coming to FVTC, I was living in Japan working as an English teacher at a Japanese high school. I was looking to transition to a new field, specifically IT. However, I had no experience and knowledge besides personal knowledge from my hobbies. By pursuing a degree and having the opportunity to work on campus as an IT intern, FVTC has provided me the professional knowledge and experience I needed to make this transition in my life. Thanks to these experiences, I recently received and accepted a job offer at a company for an IT position.
What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I am lucky to say that I have found an IT support position. I have everyone at FVTC to thank for that, specifically my IT instructors, Career Services staff and everyone in the IT department. Thank you for believing in me and providing me the knowledge and experience I need to take the next step in my life!
What’s your best advice for someone who’s not sure they’re ready for college?
What drives people crazy is not knowing what to do. However, if you want to know what to do, you have to be willing to try and take that risk. Give something a fair shot and let your unhappiness or happiness guide you.
