Why did you choose this career program?

I chose to study SUDC because of my own journey in recovery. Experiencing firsthand the challenges and triumphs of recovery has fueled my passion for supporting others in their own paths. I believe that understanding addiction on a personal and professional level equips me to provide empathetic, informed and impactful care. My goal is to create a safe and encouraging space where individuals feel empowered to rebuild their lives and discover their potential. This field allows me to give back to the community and inspire hope in those navigating similar struggles.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

I find it incredibly rewarding to witness the resilience and growth of individuals as they work toward recovery. One of the most fascinating aspects is understanding the complex interplay between biology, psychology, and environment in addiction and recovery. Learning about evidence-based practices, such as motivational interviewing and medication-assisted treatment, has deepened my appreciation for the many pathways to recovery. Additionally, the opportunity to co-facilitate groups and build therapeutic relationships during my internship and now full-time job has shown me the profound impact of meeting clients where they are and supporting their unique journeys.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I chose Fox Valley Technical College because of its excellent reputation for hands-on learning and its commitment to student success. The Substance Use Disorder Counseling program offered here is highly regarded for its comprehensive curriculum, practical training and opportunities for real-world experience through internships. The instructors are experienced professionals who provide valuable insights and mentorship, which has been instrumental in my growth. Additionally, the supportive and flexible environment at FVTC has allowed me to balance my education with other responsibilities, making it the perfect fit for pursuing my career goals.

How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?

Fox Valley Technical College has played a significant role in transforming my life. Through its supportive environment and practical training, I have gained the skills and confidence needed to pursue my dream of becoming a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. The hands-on learning opportunities, such as internships at The Mooring House and Casa Clare, have allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings, further solidifying my passion for this field. The encouragement from instructors and the connections I’ve built within the recovery community have been invaluable, inspiring me to grow both personally and professionally. FVTC has given me the tools to turn my challenges into strengths and to help others do the same.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

I’m fortunate to say that I’ve already found my dream job. I was recently hired full-time at Casa Clare, where I have the opportunity to work at an SUDC.

What’s your best advice for someone who’s not sure they’re ready for college?

My best advice is to start small, explore your interests, and remember that growth happens outside your comfort zone, college is a step toward discovering your potential.
