Why did you choose this career program?

I have always been fascinated by the idea of computers and technology: how they work and what makes them function the way they do. Before I moved to the States, I was enrolled in a college to study computer science, which is a whole different ballgame. When it came to making a decision after coming here, it was a tough one. My interest in learning how to code (software development) and my interest in hacking (cybersecurity) clashed, making it hard to decide which one to go for. After putting so much thought into it, I decided to go into cybersecurity. I was curious as to what the program had in store for me.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

I am learning that there is so much more than meets the eye. This field has so many layers to it, and each layer is built off the other and cannot exist without the other. What I find interesting is that this field evolves every single day, and there is always something new and fun to learn about. Also, while working on school assignments and projects, I realize that there is so much joy in getting a system working or putting together a document that provides either instructions or gathers proof of one’s work.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I chose Fox Valley Technical College as the starting point of my educational journey in the States. When I first moved to the United States in 2024, I was unfamiliar with the country’s educational system. My dad, also a former student of the Tech, suggested that I should attend Fox Valley Technical College to help me acclimate to the school system. A way to better understand the system before going headlong into the UW College system and potentially facing challenges with how the system works and how things are done.

How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?

In my time, I have realized that I might have chosen the tech, but it chose me as well. Fox Valley Technical College has been more than just a school to me; it has provided a second home and a supportive family. Having a backbone of amazing instructors, advisors, and classmates, I found a safe space where I can be my authentic self with flaws, strengths, and all.

An important lesson I have learned here is perfection is not the key to success, but showing up is. I realized that making mistakes is simply part of learning and growing, and every little win should be celebrated just as much as the big ones. Fox Valley Technical College has not just provided me the resources to grow academically but also personally, teaching me that while I might not know everything yet, I am in the right place to learn, and there is room for growth and progress no matter how slow or fast.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

Currently, my plan after graduation is to transfer to a 4-year college to complete my degree. After graduation, when searching for a job, I want a role where I can help and support people, no matter how much help they need. I want to be able to use the connections and success I have to help others by giving back to the community through outreach or becoming a mentor.

What’s your best advice for someone who’s not sure they’re ready for college?

Live, laugh, and learn! There is no rush or no timeline for when you have to be ready for college. Explore your options; don’t quit on your dreams (let it drive you)! What matters the most is YOU!
