4 Things to Know About the Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor Program

This summer, we will be taking a closer look at recently added and updated academic programs at Fox Valley Technical College.

Accurate information allows healthcare professionals to make the best possible decisions for their patients. FVTC’s Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor program, which has been adapted from a certificate to a technical diploma, focuses on blood collection and specimen management, ensuring students are well-prepared for their critical role in patient care.

“In less than a year, students build practical lab skills, work with real equipment and gain experience that translates directly to roles in hospitals, clinics and laboratories,” says Carrie Thompson, associate dean of the Health Division.

First of all, what is phlebotomy?

According to the National Cancer Institute:

phlebotomy (fleh-BAH-toh-mee)
A procedure in which a needle is used to take blood from a vein, usually for laboratory testing. Phlebotomy may also be done to remove extra red blood cells from the blood, to treat certain blood disorders. Also called blood draw and venipuncture.

Here are four things to know about this program:

#1 – This program is designed to help students meet the growing demand for entry-level lab professionals…fast!

FVTC’s program combines phlebotomy and specimen processing, giving students a broader skill set and preparing them for both patient-facing and laboratory operations. This helps students enter the workforce quickly — within eight or 12 weeks!

Moving from a certificate to a technical diploma also increases earning potential for program graduates.

For students who want to continue their education, this technical diploma is embedded within the Medical Laboratory Technician pathway.

#2 – Students become adept in a laboratory setting, using specialized equipment and performing various procedures.

Students in this program have opportunities with hands-on sessions focused on specimen collection and testing and procedure practices such as:

  • Blood collection techniques (venipuncture and capillary punctures)
  • Urinalysis and rapid testing
  • Specimen handling and processing
  • Lab safety and infection control

#3 – Students are ready for immediate entry to high-need healthcare roles, with opportunities for long-term career advancement.

Graduates are ready to step into roles as a phlebotomist, specimen processor or laboratory assistant in a variety of settings: hospitals, clinics, physician offices and laboratories. They are also positioned to advance into roles like a medical laboratory technician, specialize in lab operations or continue education in healthcare.

#4 – This program maximizes technical ability with flexibility.

Students gain real, job-ready skills that directly support patient care and lab operations, creating a quick, accessible entry point into healthcare careers. It offers flexibility and growth, allowing students to start working quickly and continue into advanced programs if they choose.

This program is a strong fit for students who:

  • Are interested in healthcare but want a short-term training option.
  • Enjoy hands-on, detail-oriented, technical work.
  • Want a fast pathway to employment with the option to continue their education.
