4 Things to Know about the Electrical Technician Program

This summer, we will be taking a closer look at recently added and updated academic programs at Fox Valley Technical College.

As technology continues to transform industries, employers are looking for workers who are comfortable working with electronics, troubleshooting complex equipment and understanding how hardware and software interact. Fox Valley Technical College’s Electrical Technician technical diploma was designed with those evolving workforce needs in mind.

The one-year, 25-credit program provides students with a strong foundation in electrical and electronics principles while introducing modern skills. Through hands-on labs and practical applications, students learn not only how electrical systems work, but also how to test, troubleshoot and maintain the technologies that power today’s industries.

The Electrical Technician program offers flexibility and opportunity. Graduates can enter the workforce in a variety of technical roles or continue their education through several related FVTC programs, building on the credits they’ve already earned.

Here are four things to know about this program:

#1 – This one-year program is designed to get students career-ready — fast.

The Electrical Technician program can be completed in just one year, allowing students to build valuable technical skills and enter the workforce sooner. The 25-credit technical diploma focuses on practical, industry-relevant coursework without requiring the commitment of a full associate degree.

According to Behzad Bahraminejad, Department Chair of Electronic Engineering Technology, the program was created to provide a fast entry point into electrical and electronics careers while still preparing students for long-term advancement opportunities.

#2 – Students gain experience with both electrical systems and emerging technologies.

What sets the program apart is its balance of traditional electrical fundamentals and newer technologies that employers increasingly expect technicians to understand.

Students learn core skills such as DC and AC circuit analysis, digital electronics and semiconductor device applications. At the same time, they are introduced to programming concepts used in engineering and technology settings, helping them understand the relationship between software and hardware systems.

“This broader skill set gives students an advantage as industries continue to adopt smart technologies, automation and embedded systems,” Behzad says.

#3 – Hands-on learning is built in to nearly every course.

Students spend significant time in the lab applying what they learn in the classroom. A typical lab experience might begin with calculating how a circuit should perform, then building the circuit, testing it with industry-standard equipment and troubleshooting any issues that arise.

Throughout the program, students work with oscilloscopes, digital meters and power supplies while building circuits, wiring components and exploring electronics concepts through real-world applications.

This learn-by-doing approach helps students develop the confidence and problem-solving skills employers value. Rather than simply learning theory, students graduate with experience using the tools and equipment they are likely to encounter on the job.

#4 – The program creates multiple pathways for future growth.

While graduates are prepared for entry-level positions, the diploma is also designed as a stackable credential. Students who want to continue their education can seamlessly transition into FVTC programs such as Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronic Engineering Technology or Biomedical Equipment Technology.

That flexibility opens doors to advanced roles in automation, controls, robotics, medical equipment, semiconductor technology and engineering support. As experience grows, graduates may move into leadership, supervisory or specialized technical positions.

For students who enjoy working with technology, solving problems and learning through hands-on experiences, the Electrical Technician program offers a practical and flexible path into a high-demand field, with plenty of opportunities to continue growing along the way.
