Career EXCELerate Completer a Finalist for National Truck Driving Award

Richard Flirt, a retired Navy veteran, has been recognized as one of the top 10 finalists in the 2024 Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award. This prestigious award celebrates the significant contributions that veterans are making in the transportation industry, highlighting their dedication, skill and the positive influence they bring to the field.

After serving in the Navy, Richard decided to start a new career path in the transportation industry.

“After serving four years in the Navy, I began a career in construction, however, I was not fulfilled and did not feel I was living to my full potential,” Richard explains. “I partnered with Career EXCELerate and the VA to pursue a career in trucking, and I am so thankful I did. This is the best job I’ve ever had and one I feel very passionate about.”

He earned his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) through Career EXCELerate, a job training program offered in partnership with Fox Valley Technical College, Goodwill NCW and Rawhide Youth Services. Career EXCELerate is designed to help individuals develop job skills and find a fulfilling career.

“The program emphasized how to be an efficient, responsible and safe driver,” Richard explains. “My experience with the program exceeded my expectations and has allowed me to feel confident driving long routes.”

Richard completed the program in February 2024 and was hired on the spot by Legacy Express, a veteran-owned and operated trucking company.

This month, Richard will be honored as a semi-finalist during a reception at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, OH.

This event will celebrate his achievements and those of his fellow finalists. From the ten semi-finalists, three will be selected to advance to the final round of the competition.

In December, the three finalists will travel to Washington, D.C., where the winner will be announced and presented with the keys to a Kenworth truck–valued at $155,000-.

Until then, Richard continues to grow in his new career.

“I am truly thankful for the opportunity to have found a career I love.”
