Diesel Tech Programs Add Virtual Engine

Members of our Learning Innovations team join instructors in testing a new virtual reality diesel engine.

Students in our Diesel Technology programs can now troubleshoot an engine anywhere from any angle while getting a closer look at its inner workings like never before.

Thanks to the innovative design work of Tou Xiong and Josh Janikowski of Fox Valley Technical College’s Learning Innovations team, a new virtual reality engine is now part of the college’s Diesel Technology programs. The engine responds to voice commands and includes a number of advanced vantage points to optimize the training experience for students. For example, the shell of the engine is removable by voice command so learners can gain a personal view of integral operating parts like a crankshaft, pistons, valves, connecting rods, and more. In addition, the technology could potentially be used as a continuous education tool for existing industry technicians as well.

Diesel Tech Instructor Jay Duca originated the idea for the engine. He believes the high-tech engine will also get people excited about choosing this field as a career path. Currently the New North region is experiencing a shortage of skilled diesel technicians. According to Wisconsin TechConnect, right now there are 23 local full-time job postings per month for diesel technicians.
