Why did you choose this career program?

During high school I was fortunate enough to receive an internship with the Rice Lake Fire Department. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and decided to pursue classes in emergency services at the same time I was going to school for my undergraduate degree. I discovered that my true passion is the privilege of helping people when they cannot help themselves.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

Responding to an emergency scene is an experience like no other. The scenes are often chaotic, and people are fearful. Being able to calm them and provide the care that they need despite the severity of the situation has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I am looking forward to expanding my scope of practice to help even more people.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

Fox Valley Technical College offered schedule flexibility that it very uncommon for this type of program, particularly in this area. I have found that the instructors at this school go out of their way to provide any assistance they can to students, both inside and outside of academics.

How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?

Fox Valley Technical college has changed my life by allowing me to work and pursue my goal of becoming a licensed paramedic simultaneously. The availability of instructors has helped bridge the gap between classroom and online learning. I know that I can rely on the instructors for my program to be available outside of class for questions I may have, which is not something that is easily found in larger schools.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

After graduation I am planning on gaining as much experience as a paramedic as possible, and I hope to eventually work in a firefighter-paramedic or flight paramedic role.

In one sentence, what’s your best advice for someone who’s not sure they’re ready for college?

Success in college comes down to your attitude, effort, and attendance.
