Law enforcement recruits give back while learning about the community.
Tim Hufschmid recalls a defining moment that illustrates the character of his Law Enforcement Recruit Academy students whenever they volunteer together. “A few years ago while volunteering at the Fox Cities Marathon, some recruits noticed an older military veteran struggling to finish,” recalls FVTC’s law enforcement recruit academy director. “While running with the man during his closing strides, they encouraged him to cross the finish line.”
Recruits use volunteer experiences to build camaraderie outside the classroom and to discover community resources vital to their role as police officers. Serving at area homeless shelters and Harbor House, for instance, gives them a sense of awareness when dealing with a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
The Academy is designed for students who are seeking Wisconsin certification as a police officer while carrying a minimum of 60 college credits. FVTC recruits train at the college’s nationally-recognized Public Safety Training Center, an 80-acre, high-tech facility adjacent to the Appleton International Airport.
