CDL Grant Helps FVTC Reach Future Drivers

Funding supports flexible eight‑week programs across three regional centers

Fox Valley Technical College is strengthening Wisconsin’s transportation workforce thanks to new state funding that will help more students earn their Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

As part of a statewide investment announced by Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, FVTC received $28,983 to assist 28 individuals in obtaining their CDL.

FVTC will use the funding to continue offering its Class A CDL Truck Driving Technical Diploma program at the Chilton, Clintonville and Wautoma regional centers, rotating year‑round to meet student and industry needs. This regional model gives more learners, especially those in rural areas, access to training without traveling long distances.

“We redesigned and reformatted the program in 2024, after getting student feedback and employer input,” explains Rob Behnke, director of Truck Driving at FVTC. “A key enhancement to the program is its hybrid structure. It blends online theory coursework with hands‑on Range and Road training. Students can complete the program in just eight weeks and can choose from morning, afternoon or evening schedules. This flexibility allows working adults to pursue a CDL without putting their lives on hold.”

With the state grant, eligible participants who complete the CDL program will receive 50% reimbursement of course costs, adding up to approximately $1,000 per student.

Reimbursable expenses include tuition, textbooks and the first attempt at the CDL skills test. With total program costs at about $2,070, the reimbursement reduces financial barriers for new drivers entering the workforce.

The grant is part of a $250,000 initiative throughout the state to create a stronger pipeline of professional drivers at a time when CDL‑required positions remain in high demand.
